In the near future, the world is a barren nuclear wasteland, scavenged by robots, mutants and a few human survivors. Paris is the only city left in an otherwise decimated planet, the ruins of The Louvre contain the last remaining painting in existence - The Death of Sardanapalus by Delacroix, and the last piece of music left on Earth is Alexander Scriabin's unfinished masterpiece The Mysterium - which he envisaged as a week-long epic performance which would herald a new age for mankind.

Marcel Miracle is the man who saved Paris. As he looks on with despair, an approaching army of mutants led by the warlord Khazan threaten to destroy his city once and for all. As armageddon draws closer, Marcel begins a seemingly impossible task. To finally complete The Mysterium and perform it once and for all before the last culture of mankind is erased forever.
